Joao M. Cardoso age 88, husband of the late Maria L. (Leal) Cardoso of Salem, formerly of Peabody, died peacefully Saturday afternoon at home.
Born in Terceira, Azores, Portugal the son of the late Joao and Maria ( Gaspar) Cardoso he had operated the family dairy and cattle farm for many years. Once his late wife completed her education in Portugal, they married and raised their family. As the children became adults they left Portugal and settled in Peabody with their own families. In 1981 he and his wife followed their children and moved to Peabody to be with the family.
Mr. Cardoso then became employed by Augustine’s Restaurant in Saugus for 13 years until his retirement. A happy person he enjoyed people and good conversation. A long time member of the Holy Ghost in Peabody, he was always ready for a good game of cards or dominos, and was passionate about watching bullfights.
Mr. Cardoso is survived by three children Zelia Aguiar of Tulare, CA, Maria Alina Silva of Salem and Duarte Cardoso of Peabody; seven grandchildren Anna Maria Rocha, Norbert Aguiar and Lisa Maria Mendez, Cidalia and Nizalda Silva, and Norberto and Elizabete Cardoso, six great grandchildren and two sisters, Maria and Theresa of Portugal.
He was predeceased by a son Joao Adelino Cardoso who died in 1995.
His funeral will be held on Friday at 8:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., (cor of North ST) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 9:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday from 5 to 8 PM. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
